Have you ever thought about doing Foxtrail with your children? I thought it was something for young people or corporate team activities until I started to notice there were more and more families doing Foxtrail here Zurich (where we live). I didn’t really know how Foxtrail works exactly, but as we love outdoor and hiking, I thought maybe this kind of adventure would be a nice experience for us, too.
We found a lot of different Foxtrails on their website → Link, where you can choose from around 50 trails in Switzerland, some of the trails designed especially for families with children. We wanted to escape the city but still feel the comfort, so we chose Foxtrail in the open-air museum Ballenberg which we wanted to visit for a long time.
I was happy I scheduled our Foxtrail slot in the afternoon. It was great first to have some time to see and experience Ballenberg. The museum is spread over a large area and is a very fascinating place with animals, homes and houses, and many live demonstrations of weaving, handicrafts, woodworking, etc. Our children we running around and it felt like one huge countryside playground. An absolutely amazing experience. However, after a few hours walking around, we felt our energy started to go down, and this was when Foxtrail helped to kick off our enthusiasm back again.
Finding new clues made the three of us energised (the little one was sleeping in the backpack) and boosted our motivation to go around Ballenberg again and to experience places we would never see or recognize without Foxtrail. I was surprised to see my husband and our 7yo getting soooo excited. Sometimes the glues were really difficult, and maybe because we looked so hopeless, there were always people trying to help us. We had so much laugh. Almost when the museum was about to close, we reached the last point, and there was a surprise, my daughter screamed: “Can we do it all over again?” We spent an entire fun, adventurous and fascinating day here in Ballenberg, and also thanks to Foxtrail.
From our experience, here are just a few tips:
- Don’t expect you (and your children) get into Foxtrail mood immediately, take your time.
- The Foxtrail clues are not easy to crack, some of them are very clever, and they can confuse you, so be ready to show your children you can face the challenge.
- Foxtrail is an amazing bonding experience for a family, you will be amazed at how much you will be feeling like a team, so be ready to let the kiddo lead this team.
- As an idea, Foxtrail is a great as a birthday activity for kids starting from 10yo.
