As a family, we’ve already racked up plenty of kilometres driving all over Switzerland, but this time, we decided to take advantage of the SBB RailAway family offer and went to Aquatis in Lausanne by train. It’s a trip we had always wanted to do, and since our younger daughter will soon turn two, it just felt like perfect timing for introducing her a big aquarium.
Travelling from Zurich to Lausanne (and back) I could not imagine easier. The rocking motion of the train lulled our children to sleep almost immediately. Changing to the metro, however, was a bit more tricky. The kids were still sleepy but then arriving at Aquatis made us all go “Wow!”. Even from the outside this place already looked like it was well worth travelling from far. Knowing that it was the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe, we still didn`t expect how big and modern it looked.
From the minute we walked in our kids went silent looking around with eyes wide opened. The place was crowded with mirrors everywhere, and interactive video installations, reflections, displays and illuminations. They were fascinated by the reflection of a ship sailing overhead that appeared to be underneath. Despite being a freshwater aquarium, the exhibited animals were fantastic. Also, besides all the fun fish-watching, we could learn about underwater life and different continents. After our heads were full of fish we took a break for lunch at the cafeteria, the kids could enjoy the day playing and running around outside. After the break, we went through Aquatis for the second time and could take more time on the species that our kids found the most interesting. Of course, it was the big crocodile that happened to be in a good mood (see the video) which performance turned to be the biggest highlight of our trip.
