Bern is such a beautiful city absolutely worth a visit. Being the capital of Switzerland and part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites gives this city extra points worth a visit with children. We had only 1,5 days to spent in Bern and couldn’t see everything, but we managed to discover the biggest highlights. Based on our experience, here is our weekend trip with kids to Bern and some recommendations on how you can spend a nice family day in Bern.
The best point to star discovering Bern is to start at the Bundesplatz. You will be delighted to explore the area around the parliament building and to enjoy a charming view. The kids will for sure love the fountains, especially in summer!
From there you can move further to explore the old town which I think not only beautiful but also really cool. It feels like a hectic urban life there was grabbed in the medieval townscape. So fascinating!
There are several cool playgrounds in Bern, one of them is Münsterplattform that you will find by walking down the old town. A beautiful panorama view and a cute cafe shop make this place a unique playground for children and a meeting spot for people all ages. From Münsterplattform you can take a lift down to the river Aare.
From the Münster it`s not far to the Bärengraben where you will see 3 wild bears peacefully living in the middle of the city. Really amazing.
Taking a walk along the river, you will eventually get to the museum’s area of Bern. Where, after all the amazing things mentioned above, the biggest highlight for our kids was the Museum of Communication where we spent at last 5 hours. A really great and kind of different museum filled with interactive activities where your kids and even you can get a lot of useful information about technology, communications and media.
Overnight we spent at the new Youth Hostel which is literally a glance away from the Bundeshaus (the Parliament Building), which makes it very attractive when you travel with kids and look for an easy going but still central accommodation place.
