For a lot of mothers breastfeeding journey is not a walk in the park. But we have options and we take the ones that work the best for us and our babies. The best option for me in my breastfeeding journey was breast pumps. I was lucky I was introduced to Medela and therefore I could and still can successfully accomplish my breastfeeding career – with my first child for more than 5 months, with the second, I’m planning, it will be longer.
With my first child I had problems breastfeeding, my baby couldn’t latch well so I had to look for solutions. I used breast pump but I somehow felt sad that I couldn’t breastfeed directly. My second baby had no problem latching but I felt uncomfortable that I couldn’t measure, test or control my breastfeeding; my baby was stressed and hungry all the time. So this time pumping was my choice and I’m still happy about my decision.
Now, when my baby is 3 months old I can see a lot of advantages in pumping. She feeds well and sleeps through the night. I’m more relaxed as I can see how much milk my baby gets. I can plan my day between 4 hours feeding intervals. For a lot of women pumping is a great breastfeeding solution when they go back to work, as I work from home, I appreciate that I have more freedom. For example, I can leave my little one with my mom or my husband and take the older daughter to the theatre. Every week I have one evening to myself so I do gym or dinners with friends.
I can combine pumping with breastfeeding and formula, it`s also much more easier with the new Medela Calma bottle that designed in a way that babies don’t forget how to latch mommy’s breasts. Plus, pumping ahead I am able to build up a stock and store my milk in the freezer that I can use within the next 6 months.
