Hotel Sand: The Hidden Gem of South Tyrol for Active Families

When it comes to finding the perfect family hotel in South Tyrol, there are many amazing options, but only a few are true hidden gems. We recently had the privilege of discovering one of them. Hotel Sand is nestled in the heart of the sunny Venosta Valley, surrounded by endless vineyards, apple orchards, and breathtaking mountain landscapes, just a few kilometres from the charming town of Merano. Our short holiday turned out to be the perfect family retreat that blended the most important elements: active family time, wellness and the beautiful nature of South Tyrol.

Arriving at Hotel Sand, the first thing you notice is the charming garden. It feels like a small oasis with a rare sense of ease. It’s a bliss when you know the children can run freely across the grass while you can slow down with a coffee or a glass of something cold beneath the shade of the trees.

The hotel was also incredibly welcoming to our little dog. She felt genuinely welcome, which, as many travelling pet owners know, is not always the case in other hotels.

Hotel Sand is definitely not a hotel run by distant managers or corporate systems. The Bernhart family has spent generations perfecting the art of authentic alpine hospitality, creating a place that feels both refined and deeply personal. During our stay, we had the pleasure of meeting the family members personally, which made the entire experience feel even warmer and more authentic.

We also really appreciated the size of our room. It was spacious and more than ample for a family stay, something that makes a real difference when travelling with children. And we genuinely looked forward to dinner every evening. The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and relaxed, and the food was very good. It had that homemade feel, enriched with an authentic South Tyrolean touch. Simply delicious!

If you are an active family like us, this place is simply an incredible opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful places in South Tyrol. Hotel Sand is located at the threshold of three extraordinary natural areas and one of the largest national parks in the Alps. There are so many things to do and discover, from visiting historic castles and open-air museums to biking and hiking diverse mountain trails at varying elevations and levels of difficulty. And the hotel is fully equipped to meet your family’s needs. It offers bikes and guided mountain hikes for all ability levels.

This area of South Tyrol is also known for its ancient Waalwege irrigation channels. We absolutely loved our Waalwege hike: gentle, mostly flat, and often shaded, making it perfect even for little children. It reminded us of our Levada walk on Madeira Island, but with its own Alpine-South Tyrolean character, where water, stone, and orchards quietly guide you through the landscape.

And finally, the outdoor pool! It’s definitely the highlight of the hotel. Actually, Hotel Sand has several pools: the indoor pool, the saltwater pool, and the gorgeous 25m-long pool surrounded by a garden (which was perfectly heated during our visit, when the weather was still quite cool), adult-only saunas and relaxing wellness rooms. Just imagine coming back from a long hike in the mountains and diving into the inviting water. What a treat for both kids and adults!

And if you’re already inspired to book your stay, here’s a little insider tip. Hotel Sand is not a typical family hotel with kids’ clubs and organised entertainment. Instead, it’s a hotel for active families and it offers very attractive family holiday packages. Hotel Sand is open from the end of March through mid-November, a perfect window for an active summer season in South Tyrol.
